Prepare yourself for medical emergencies at home. You never know when you might have to reach out for that bottle of Dettol or that tube of antiseptic.

First of all, it is advisable to have a home First Aid shelf. Its dimensions can be three feet by two feet in height and breadth respectively, and there should be six inches space between the rear and the front of the shelf. It should be locked, and the key hung on a peg above the rack out of reach of toddlers. If these simple remedies suggested here fail to have the desired effect after a few days, please consult your doctor.

Contents of the First Aid shelf

  • Antiseptic lotion — Dettol or Savlon.
  • Two-inch gauze bandages.
  • Absorbent cotton roll.
  • Adhesive tape, two rolls — one inch and two inches wide.
  • Band-Aid or Johnsons ready- to- use medicated plasters of various sizes.
  • Sofra Tulle gauze.
  • Antibiotic cream –soframycin or Neosporin skin cream.
  • A box of twelve four inch sterile dressings individually wrapped for cleaning and covering wounds.
  • A tube of petroleum jelly.
  • A pair of scissors.
  • One artery forceps for holding the cotton swab while cleaning wounds.
  • Oral thermometer.
  • Hot water bag.
  • Torch with fresh batteries.
  • Emergency phone numbers – doctor, hospital, ambulance, fire brigade, police.

Painkillers and drugs used in lowering raised body temperature

Paracetamol is the safest and most effective analgesic and antipyretic drug. It comes in both tablet and syrup form and can be used for the rapid release of fever, pains, and aches such as headache, sore throat, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, earache, toothache, osteoarthritis, and postoperative pain.
Dental pain is a widespread occurrence among all age groups. The pain may vary from a mild throbbing type to the severe lancinating type. Paracetamol relieves this pain until a dentist attends to the problem.
In patients suffering from hemophilia which is a clotting disorder, those having a peptic ulcer, or those in whom asthma is precipitated by aspirin, it is preferable to use paracetamol.

Paracetamol doses
    The tablets contain 500 mg of paracetamol each, and the syrup comes in 15 ml and 30 ml bottles. Each teaspoon of this liquid contains 125 ml of paracetamol. Trade names are Calpol, Crocin, etc.

In case the child is jaundiced please consult your doctor for information on the dosage.

Warning: Crocin should not be administered for more than ten days. It should be administered with caution in patients with impaired liver and kidney function.

Side Effects
Crocin has rarely been found to produce side effects. Skin rashes and other allergic reactions occur occasionally and may be accompanied by skin and mucosal lesions.

Overdose :
Acute toxicity occurs with a single dose of 10-15 grams. Liver damage occurs within 2-4 days of ingesting a large dose.
Alcoholics and patients or barbiturates and malnourished patients are sensitive to the toxic effects of crocin. 

Ibuprofen belongs to a family of painkillers called Non Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or (NSAIDs )

Ibuprofen is one of the most frequently used over-the-counter painkillers used by people all over the world. They have got painkilling activity comparable to that of paracetamol, but paracetamol is preferred, particularly in case of the elderly.

In regular full dosage, Ibuprofen has a lasting painkilling effect. It can bring down the swelling in an inflamed area, and it can also bring down the temperature. It is more potent than aspirin, with a decreased incidence of side effects such as gastric irritation. It is also useful in the control of menstrual pain and is effective in headaches and dental pain. It can also be used in migraine, sprains, and strains, and cases of frozen shoulder. Ibuprofen usually comes in three strengths, 200 mg, 400mg, and 600mg tablets.

ADULT 1200 mg to 1800 mg per day In divided doses preferably after meals
CHILD 20 mg per kg of body weight   Three divided doses

The average daily dose for an adult required for optimum benefit is 1200mg to 1800mg in divided doses, preferably after meals.

In children, it can be administered in doses of 20mg per Kg body weight in three divided doses.

Adverse effects

The patient can have nausea, vomiting, epigastric discomfort, dizziness, headache, skin rash, a decrease in the number of one of the components of blood called platelets, and it may elevate the blood pressure and decrease the efficiency of antihypertensive drugs.

There are few absolute contraindications for the use of this drug like-active peptic ulcer, G.I.bleeding, and hypersensitivity. Also, it should be carefully administered to people suffering from kidney, liver, or heart ailments.

Trade names: One of the commonest available brands of Ibuprofen is known as Brufen and can be obtained from the chemist without a doctors prescription.
