Beauty treatments for the over 50s: time for more complex care

When cleansing and nourishing no longer help, beauty salons and clinics are the next step

You?ve spent hours cleansing, toning, buffing and nourishing your skin over the years, yet time?s still caught up and rewarded you with wrinkles. The facts are that as we get older our skin loses its natural elasticity, gets drier and starts to thin. Fatty deposits which give skin its healthy plump appearance start to disappear leading to sagging and wrinkles.

Exposure to the sun?s rays, alcohol, smoking, poor diet and even stress play a part in taking their toll on our looks. But before chucking in the towel in disgust, why not check out the latest treatments designed for the over 50s?

Scientific breakthroughs have led to all manner of products and treatments hitting the high street – all aiming to help halt the march of time. Big name brands, such as Est?e Lauder, L?Or?al and Clinique, have launched their own ranges of anti-ageing products, while high street stores offer their own budget treatments.

For harder working solutions you can visit your local beauty clinic for the latest in treatments. Beauty clinics offer a wealth of non-surgical treatments. One such remedy is Botox. Injected into the skin, Botox is used as an effective way of removing frown lines, wrinkles or crow?s feet. Minute quantities of Botox are injected into the problem area with a very fine needle, with results lasting anything up to six months.

Another treatment offered by the Transform Medical Group, based in the UK is called New Fill. According to the company the product fills out wrinkles, leaving skin feeling smoother and firmer. Laser skin resurfacing is another Transform therapy that has been designed to combat the effects of ageing and over exposure to strong sunlight. The technique works by removing surface layers of skin to improve superficial wrinkles and general skin texture.

The Harley Medical Group, which has several clinics across the UK, also offers a variety of treatments for the over 50s. Facial lines and wrinkles can be treated with a non-invasive surgery technique called Cool Touch laser, which works by stimulating the cells to produce collagen.

Fed up of frown furrows and lipstick lines? The group also offers collagen injections to fill the offending areas.

The Saks Hair & Beauty chain, which operates salons in the UK, offers an amazing variety of treatments for older clients. From massage and body treatments, to facials, non-surgical lifts, complementary therapies and pamper packages, the award-winning company has it all. One anti-ageing solution is The Oxygenator. A spokesman for the firm said: ?The anti-ageing treatment for lines and wrinkles is the perfect alternative to invasive facial surgery. The no-needle oxygen pressure injection, leaves skin feeling and looking revitalised.? The treatment takes around one hour to complete and costs vary between salons.

Relaxing

For a fantastic facial with a difference, why not book yourself a Saks Sensory Heaven treatment. The therapy, which combines a facial with a massage, is designed to be a treat from the tips of the toes to the top of the head. The remedy places emphasis on abdominal breathing, atmosphere and aroma. The spokesman explained: ?Skin brushing and toning precedes a warming mask on the back to detoxify, relax and soothe any troubled areas, such as sciatic, spinal or muscular problems, or to aid digestion. While the properties in the mask are working, a thorough aromatherapy massage takes place. The mask is removed before concentrating on the back area. Kneading movements with energising massage oil use the power of hands and aroma to alleviate stress. Pressure point techniques are used on the tummy and chest areas to release energy and to encourage lymph draining for detoxification.?

We can?t stop the clock but that?s no reason why age should be a barrier to beauty, check out the latest treatments and in no time at all you?ll be glowing from head to toe.

Top tips

  • When considering any treatment always make sure the salon?s staff are fully trained – you should also receive an explanation of everything that will take place during your appointment.
  • Check out the clinic or salon – does it feel friendly, is it comfortable and clean?
  • Word of mouth works so get friends, family and colleagues to recommend good salons.
  • To help keep your youthful complexion, always use sunscreen when outside and invest in a good sun hat to keep harsh rays off your face.
  • Skin rejuvenates during sleep so getting a good night?s kip will not only keep you feeling good, but looking great too.
  • Pack it in – smoking causes lines around the mouth and increases facial dryness.
  • Tanning beds emit UVA rays, which accelerate ageing.
  • Dry skin is more prone to wrinkles but whatever your skin type, you should always use a good moisturiser.
